Ju-Jitsu originated from the battlefields of Japan between the 14th and 16th century, when the Samurai would find themselves disarmed. Using only their limbs, the warriors had the skills to neutralise and defeat their armoured enemy unarmed at close range.
Using grappling techniques, students of Ju Jitsu are taught to use their opponent’s energy against them in the form of pins, joint locks and throws. In this way, it is not considered to be a violent sport, but rather, is based on values of respect, trust and confidence.
The system of progressing through the various Ju Jitsu grades or belts is one which is used across a number of other martial arts. Although a Western invention, it is rumoured to have originated in the East where a martial arts novice would have a clean, white belt which would become discoloured over time – indicating their experience and progress.
We have developed a syllabus to support our students’ progression through the grades, providing them with key milestones to support them as they learn the art of Ju Jitsu.
There is no expected time frame during which students are expected to move from one grade to the next. Their progression is subject to ability and investment of time. We host 3 junior grading events each year, normally in March, July and November.
